Literature Reviews

more about Literature reviews. It is an analysis of what has been written about the topic, not an analysis of the topic itself. It is analysis which encompasses different perspectives.

We have to locate (1), Assess Relevance (2), Show command of the subject (3), Show awareness of problematic or contested areas of the topic (4)

Gideon will post a couple of examples on the MLE - 1 good and 1 bad example

see slides for 11 features of a good review.

step 2 - context

eg. UK or worldwide; current or historical; limitations; language etc. use the context to decide on search parameters.

step 3 - search strategy

analyze topic, identify concepts and keywords.

search for all keywords at once

step 4 - consider synoynms and abbreviations

young people - teens - teenagers youth adolesence

ASBO

wider/narrower terms

Media = TV computer games internet newspapers etc

alternative spellings behaviour/behavior

correlaton v cause / effect relevance

use Boolean terms in search eg. violence AND media AND teenagers

teenagers NOT children

use wildcards
behavi?r (? or #)

use advanced search features eg EBSCO has an advanced search

record google search results and counts

O - Objectivity
M - Method
P - Provenance
T - Timeline
