Lyle regards listing role descriptors as a simplistic approach (2002, pp. 59 - 60). He suggests that in order to define the role of the coach the concept of the coaching process needs to be understood. The role of the coach can then be described in terms of the coaching process. A definition of the role of a coach that Lyle arrives at is as follows.
"Role will be conceptualised as the typical and expected range of behaviours and practice that results from the coach's interpretation of the part to be played by the coach in achieving the improved or sustained performance that is the purpose of sports coaching." (Lyle, 2002, p. 60).
